TFT display LED Backlight:

TFT screen technology has become the most popular display with the best combination of price, color quality and product life expectancy, just a few years since migrating from CRT. In the TFT display structure, the LCD pixel has to rely on the backlight module to provide sufficient light to make the screen visible. The most popular existing solution uses Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) to backlight the TFT screen. However, CCFL is known to have problems of performance during low temperature starting, incorrect color temperature, power dimming speed and lifetime issues. As the world moves toward “mercury free” products, the CCFL with mercury vapor inside its tube will eventually have to be phased out.

The display industry is adopting Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to replace the CCFL as the backlight source, as LEDs can provide better color gamut and its response speed is fast enough to do the dynamic function control synchronizing with video signal. As “green” electronics are the trend of future products, LEDs have the benefit of consuming less power and remove the concern of mercury pollution.
